My name is Dee; I’m married, write poetry, and am a follower of Christ. Being a writer defines who I am; it’s what I enjoy doing. What I write demonstrates my love for Jesus Christ, and thankfulness for the incomparable gift of His salvation. I hold to the Bible as the inerrant, infallible, and inspired Word of God. I take God at His Word. Truth is my foundation and my guide, not my feelings or impressions, for nothing good dwells within me – in my flesh (Romans 7:20-21). Any good that dwells within me can only come from Him (Philippians 2:13, Hebrews 13:21).

About ten years ago, Jesus brought me back to Himself; He rescued this wayward lamb. This is my testimony to His grace, mercy, love, and faithfulness. I grew up attending a Methodist church; even at the age of four I wanted to talk to God, and knew I wasn’t good enough to get into heaven (despite my mom saying “Oh, you just need to be a good girl.”) I attended church at various points in my life; it was all ceremony and legalism to me, and I hated it. The church I spent most of my years at was non-denominational (with a Baptist bent). They taught the gospel, but what I didn’t realize then (but do now) is that I ‘tried’ to do everything on my own; they did emphasize the need to make a ‘decision’ for Christ. I must have prayed the sinner’s prayer hundreds of times, tears streaming, but then my life didn’t change, even though I tried to ‘live the Christian life’ on my own. I remember praying to Jesus that He “not forget nor give up” on me.
For many years I ran from Him, seeking happiness in what this world had to offer, but finding only an aching emptiness and disillusionment. But Jesus is faithful, and He heard and answered my prayer. The turning point in my life came in October, 2008, when my hubby and I received a call that my hubby’s niece, Molly (16 yrs. old, she was a believer) had been killed instantly in an auto accident. Life became a blur as the family tried to deal with the shock and grief. Meanwhile, I was brought face to face with a question I’d been running from for years: Was I really saved? What if that had been me in that car? Voices tried to dissuade me from thinking about examining where I stood with God, to the tune of “too little, too late, He can’t save you now!” Well, I was tired of those ‘voices’, and decided to get before Him in prayer and have Him show me the Truth. I wasn’t content to rely on a ‘decision’ or ‘decisions’ made years earlier. My eyes were opened for the first time concerning what salvation really is; it is all of God, not of man. I couldn’t choose to live for Him because my will was ‘bound’. So I asked Jesus to make me willing, to forgive me, and to be my Lord, because I wanted Him in my life so badly, and knew I needed Him. He gave me the faith to believe, and I once was blind, but now I could see. My understanding coalesced in a big, big way when I was listening to this song by Petra:
These lyrics in particular spoke to me very powerfully:
I have a thankful heart
That you have given me
And it can only come from You
Finally, something unexpected happened shortly thereafter. I began writing poetry in praise to Him. Below is one of the first poems I penned, a love note/thank you letter all in one:
“Miracle”
You have brought joy to my heart
And peace to my spirit
You have created a miracle
A heart, once cold and unyielding
Has become warm and responsive to You
You have shown grace and mercy
To one who is so undeserving
It is a mystery
That cannot be explained in mere words
But through the eyes of faith
It is accepted and understood
And the mind and heart
Abide with You In the peaceful, settled rest
That only You can give
To a broken, repentant sinner
You call Your own
Now and forever.
It is the grateful song of the saints
They sing to their God in praise
A spiritual melody in their hearts
As their thanks to Him they raise
It is reliance upon their Redeemer
His finished work upon the Cross
It is for them He spilled His blood
Purchased them at so great a cost
It is the freedom they have in Him
A higher calling and excellent way
To live out the Truth of the gospel
Here and now and every single day
Isaiah 12:2 (NASB)
“Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For the LORD GOD is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.”
Colossians 3:16 (NASB)
Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
You paid the price at the Cross of Calvary
You tasted death, set sin’s prisoners free
You raise to life those who trust in You
You give them hope as only You can do
You love them with a love that never dies
You hear their prayers and their hearts’ cries
You are present, even in their darkest hour
You strengthen them in Your mighty power
You promised that you would come back again
You have said none but the Father knows when
You will gather together all who are Your own
You will lead Your lambs to their eternal home
Romans 6:4 (NASB)
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
I Peter 2:24 (NASB)
He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
Colossians 2:13-15 (NASB)
13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.
Anything of value I’ve done
Is only by Your Hand of grace
Forever You my pardon won
Which nothing can ever erase
Strength in self I don’t possess
But all I am and have is in You
My Rock, My Mighty Fortress
Without You, no good do I do
All that matters is You, not me
If not for You, I’d certainly fall
I pray to serve You obediently
My Jesus, My Lord, All in All
Romans 5:17 (NASB)
For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
John 1:16 (NASB)
For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace
Wherever our treasure is, then there our hearts also will be
Wordliness brings bondage; our liberty in Christ sets us free
Compromise is the fool’s path; Truth is the way of the wise
Sin confounds its victims; God’s Word opens spiritual eyes
Pride is the height of arrogance; humility is a lesson learned
Great is His grace; His salvation, a gift that no one can earn
He is our Sanctuary, though trials and troubles upon us come
He is Jesus, our Forever Love when our time on earth is done
Hebrews 13:5-6 (NASB)
5 for He Himself has said, “I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,”
6 so that we confidently say, “THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?”
Sanctification is an ongoing and lifelong process
As the vestiges of this world the Spirit strips away
The sin that we hide; the thin veneer of our pride
Is exposed to the Light; as night is turned into day
The idols that captivate us; those beautiful illusions
Shatter as Truth’s Sword smashes them one by one
Taking their place is God’s Holiness and His grace
The masterpiece-to-be; a mirror image of God’s Son
II Corinthians 3:18 (NASB)
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.
I Corinthians 15:49 (NASB) Just as we have borne the image of the earthy, we will also bear the image of the heavenly.
Philippians 1:6 (NASB)
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
As myriads of stars illumine the nighttime sky
So do Saints in Christ display His Holy Light
Purified and refined by the Truth of His Word
Walking by faith in Him, not by physical sight
Apart from Him, they are like ships lost at sea
He loses none; He brings them safely to shore
He is their Shepherd Who watches over them
He is their God Who loves them forevermore
Psalms 36:9 (NASB) For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.
This is our prayer to You for each day
To set our hearts upon eternal things
You are sovereign; You are in control
Of whatever tomorrow to us brings
This life is but a wisp; a mere vapor
Treasures stored up on earth will pass
Each breath and heartbeat is Your gift
Only works done for Your glory will last
A brilliantly wonderful future we have
Perfect, Heavenly harmony of life anew
Joy unspeakable; as it was meant to be
And forever we will be worshipping You
II Corinthians 4:18 (NASB)
while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
From Age to Age He is; Beginning and End
Majestic, Mighty King; Redeemer and Friend
All God’s Saints dwell in that Heavenly place
Surrounded by His beauty; awed by His grace
Swelling choruses of praise rise to His Throne
None Other Is Worthy; There Is Only He Alone
The Ancient of Days, Name Above All Names
Everlasting to Everlasting, unendingly He reigns
His Sons and Daughters; His Children eternally
Serve He who was, is, and forevermore shall be
Exodus 15:11 (NASB)
“Who is like You among the gods, O LORD? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders?
Psalms 90:2 (NASB)
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
Behold Him; Your Eternal Creator
All Creation reverberates His glory
Behold Him; Your Heavenly Father
Lovingkindness; redemption’s story
Behold Him; Your Matchless King
Majestic, Holy; Crowned in Might
Behold Him; your Savior and Lord
The Only Way; the Truth and Life
Behold Him; Christ Jesus, Messiah
One Sacrifice; blood spilled for you
Behold Him; Lamb Enthroned Above
Everlasting; the Word Pure and True
Revelation 5:13 (NASB)
And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”
Psalms 113:4-7 (NASB)
4 The LORD is high above all nations; His glory is above the heavens.
5 Who is like the LORD our God, Who is enthroned on high,
6 Who humbles Himself to behold The things that are in heaven and in the earth?
7 He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the needy from the ash heap
He is your Redeemer; Your Forever Friend
His love, mercy, and grace will never end
He is mighty and invincible in His power
Eternal Lord and King; Shelter and Tower
Dependence upon Jesus makes you strong
His Word sustains and carries you along
Prayer is your source of peace and hope
Brings you through; enables you to cope
Remember all that He has done for you
He has forgiven you and made you new
His Truth is like a mirror; in it you see
Your Savior’s Face; He is your destiny
Psalms 37:39-40 (NASB)
39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in time of trouble.
40 The LORD helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from the wicked and saves them, Because they take refuge in Him.
Who are we that God notices us?
Creator of All; Transcendent King
Why did He send His Son to die?
On the Cross, a Perfect Offering
Why does He hear our prayers?
In Jesus, we have righteousness
How can we receive forgiveness?
When our sins to Him we confess
Why were we put upon this earth?
For His glory, and because He lives
What motivates us to live for Him?
Because He is ours; and we are His
Ephesians 2:4-7 (NASB)
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
